THE ROLE OF THE MöKKI IN FINNISH CULTURE
A mökki is more than just a simple second home. These rustic, country houses, made of wood, are an integral part of Finnish culture. Mökkit are generally found in the middle of the forest near a water source, lake or sea, and sometimes on islands. The main purpose for a stay in a Mökki is simple : to disconnect.
Often, the mökkit have electricity but no running water. They do not always have showers and often have dry toilets outside. Hence the importance of the sauna.
THE SAUNA
Mökkit always come with a sauna, like almost every accommodation in Finland.
Wooden or electric, a sauna will enable you not only to relax but also to wash yourself. Traditionally, Finnish people enjoy going from sauna to lake then lake to sauna, repeating the operation several times.
